Étienne BURNEL (Rennes, Ille-et-Vilaine, 1762–1835) Colonial Administrator, Governor of GUYANA - Copy of the Proclamation by BURNEL, Special Agent of the Executive Directory, delegated to French Guiana, addressed to the farming citizens. “Work or Death.” Issued in CAYENNE on the 25th of Brumaire, Year 7 (November 15, 1798), signed by him “Étienne BURNEL,” certified as a true copy. 3 pages in-4° + cover of the printed document. “Response to Mr. J. Aymé, one of the deportees who returned from French Guiana, by BURNEL, French citizen, former government representative to the Eastern Colonies and French Guiana, Year 8 (1800).” 1 page in-8° + “Biography of My Father Étienne Laurent Pierre BURNEL” signed by the widow LE COR. Notebook containing 10 handwritten pages, “Copy of the Breton biography by LEVOT, curator of the Brest Library. ” + Letter from a former friend addressed to Mr. BURNEL, in RENNES. Paris, June 25, 1814: “I regret that the former government did not embrace your excellent views regarding our former colonies; I do not know whether the same principles might be suitable for our current administration, at a time when we are about to recover several of these settlements. So far, the only intention of the current administration that I am aware of is the desire to reestablish the SLAVE TRADE. If you had any ideas regarding the reestablishment of this trade, you might be doing a favor, but I would not be able to support you…” 1 page, in-4°
