NASA. LARGE FORMAT. The first historic image of the planet Mercury taken by the Mariner 10 interplanetary spacecraft. It was taken while the spacecraft was approximately 5.38 million kilometers from the planet. Mariner 10 subsequently took more than 2,300 images of Mercury, revealing its crater-covered surface. This mission provided the first detailed observations of the planet closest to the Sun. It marked a major milestone in the exploration of the Solar System. 1971. Post-processed chromogenic print.
