EMPRESS MARIE LOUISE – Binding with Coat of Arms / An except - Lot 8
EMPRESS MARIE LOUISE – Binding with Coat of Arms / An exceptional and rare volume from her library at the Ducal Palace in Parma; this is the *Amanacco della Toscana* for the year 1823, published in Florence by the Stamperia Granducale, 514 pp. – The binding is particularly fine, in full red morocco leather (7.5 x 11.5 cm, 3 cm thick); the two covers are stamped in the center within an oval with the monogram “ML” for Marie-Louise, surmounted by the imperial crown, set within a gilded border adorned with floral motifs and thread frames; the spine is stamped in the center with the coat of arms of the Duchess of Parma (a widow for two years, she had abandoned her Napoleonic imperial coat of arms), the title is stamped within a solid oval gilded with fine gold and stands out in relief; the spine is entirely framed by a border featuring gilded motifs; the endpapers are lined with turquoise satin bands on a silver background; the edges are alternately red and gold – This is truly a gem of a bookbinding, in good condition, though it shows some signs of age and slight scuffing
