Charles Antoine de LA ROCHE-AYMON (1697–1777, Grand Chaplain - Lot 94
Charles Antoine de LA ROCHE-AYMON (1697–1777, Grand Chaplain of France, Bishop of Tarbes, then Archbishop of Toulouse, then Narbonne, then Archbishop and Duke of Reims and Peer of France, Cardinal in 1771; he administered the last rites to Louis XV; it was he who baptized Louis XVI in 1761, confirmed him, had him receive his First Communion in 1766, married him in 1770, and crowned him in 1775) / Letter signed in his own hand as Archbishop of Narbonne, Versailles, September 10, 1761: “I have spoken with Mr. Bernis, gentlemen, as I promised you in my last letter. This minister presented me with reasons so just and compelling that I could not refuse them. Indeed, one cannot take too many precautions to protect oneself from the plague at a time when we learn that it is making itself felt in the Levant, and this is not the time to divide the quarantine stations—you cannot, therefore, be too vigilant in preventing a recurrence. Moreover, we must hope that a time will come when we will have nothing to fear in this regard—you know of my zeal for your city and my desire to support it and expand its trade —You may rely on me to seize every opportunity to provide you with further proof of this and to express to you the sentiments with which I remain, Gentlemen, your most humble and affectionate servant" - On the reverse, a handwritten receipt note reads: “Letter from His Excellency the Archbishop of Narbonne, informing us of the minister’s response regarding quarantines” [Mgr. de La Roche-Aymon met with Cardinal de Bernis (then Minister of Foreign Affairs), who confirmed to him the grave danger of the plague spreading to France—a plague that was then raging particularly in Smyrna— and therefore recommended quarantining ships entering French ports—this letter was thus likely addressed to the administrators of a port city such as Toulon or Marseille]
