AMERICA. End of the American War of Independence on September 3, 1783. An autograph (unsigned) petition by Sieur de PERSIGNY, written in the third person, addressed to the Duke of CASTRIES, dated July 3, 1784, requesting compensation for the loss of his corvette. The letter is endorsed by the Marquise de POLIGNAC: “The Marshal has expressed his satisfaction to Monsieur de Persigny regarding the conduct he displayed throughout the war, and particularly in connection with the loss of his corvette, acknowledging that this officer fulfilled all his duties with great tact; especially through the care he took to save the King’s property (at the expense of his own) and the lives of his sailors; gives Monsieur de Persigny reason to hope that the Marshal will not depart from the principles of justice, and that he will be willing to grant Monsieur de Persigny compensation commensurate with the losses he suffered in this misfortune. He has the honor of pointing out to the Marshal that he has not yet received any pardon from His Majesty (Louis XVI), not even for having carried out with distinction the mission of delivering the news of the Peace to the Windward Islands (the French West Indies). Endorsement by Charles de LA CROIX, Marquis de CASTRIES (1727–1801), Secretary of State for the Navy from 1780 to 1787: “Good for 2 cents...”. 1 folio page.
