Viala, Baron CHARON (1797–1880) Major General, Governor of Algeria, Senator – Autograph letter signed by Viala CHARON, Colonel in command of the Corps of Engineers in Algeria, Algiers, August 25, 1844, to the Lieutenant General in command of the Province of ORAN (Algeria). 2 pages (28 x 19 cm): “My General. You have already recognized the inadequacy of the means of transportation for the Corps of Engineers in TLEMCEN, despite the recent purchases of mules, and even more so the shortage of sapper drivers. The detachment’s strength could, if necessary, be increased by transferring a few men from the detachments in Oran, Mascara, and Mostaganem…. Finally, the last reason is that I am awaiting horses from France and intend to ask the Minister or the Marshal Governor to have some of them sent to the Oran Division; upon their arrival, the various detachments, which will have been reduced in strength, will then require an essential reinforcement…’”
