Gauguin Paul / Huyghe René
Ancient Mahorian cult. Facsimile edition faithfully reproducing the 54-page booklet with illustrations and texts by Paul GAUGUIN, followed by the 38-page study by René HUYGHE, entitled: "Presentation of the Ancient Mahorie Cult, the Key of Noa-Noa". Covered with a lithographically printed illustrated cardboard, under rhodoïd with printed title. Well preserved copy. In 1891, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) left France, his wife and children to go to Tahiti. Upon his arrival, he wanted to strip himself of his European culture and penetrate the local spirit and customs. He stayed there for 3 years. It was during this first stay that he wrote the Ancien Culte mahorie. With a fluid writing and scribbled with watercolours and drawings of incomparable freshness, he describes the creation of the universe, enumerates the long list of gods, and records the beliefs and prayers of the ancient Tahitians. Belonging to the Musée d'Orsay and kept in the Louvre, the precious notebook seems modest, yet it is nonetheless the matrix of Gauguin's Tahitian work, the experimental laboratory and the genesis of his spiritual and artistic quest.
