ROHAN Duke Henri de] Interests and maxims... - Lot 75 - Vermot et Associés
ROHAN Duke Henri de] Interests and maxims of Princes and sovereign states. In Colgne (Amsterdam), Jean du Païs, 1666. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-12 contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, edges speckled (binding formerly rest., qq slight defects and russeting, angular lack of paper in the lower corner of the last 3 ff. with loss of qq letters, lacks the last blank ff., stamp). (8)-248 and 245 pages including title. One could read a bit of everything and anything about these printings given under the false name of Jean du Païs in Cologne... What is certain is that the tiny italic mention on the print affixed at the bottom of the titles indicates without ambiguity a clandestine reprint. In addition, the advertisement at the bottom of each page suggests a Dutch (or Belgian) printing workshop. These two works (the second was published for the first time in 1665 only) are a true treatise of geopolitics before the time, the whole describing succinctly but precisely the relations of a state with another within Europe of the time and even beyond. These interests are historical, political, genealogical, and strategic: interests of the king of France on Flanders, of the king of France on Genoa, on Naples, on Luxembourg, on Lorraine, on the Franche Comté of Burgundy, etc. Interests of the King of Spain in Jerusalem, in Siena, in England, etc. Interests of the Duke of Savoy in Geneva. Interests of the House of Austria over the Swiss, etc. It is the whole political and historical framework of Europe in the Grand Siècle that is thus described.
