Antonio Seguí (Córdoba, Argentina, 1934... - Lot 62 - Vermot et Associés
Antonio Seguí (Córdoba, Argentina, 1934 - Buenos Aires, 2022) For a Zoology Oil on canvas 27 x 41 cm Signed and dated on the back: 1/8/1964 Slight jumps of painting. Registered in the Antonio Seguí Archives under the n°1964-035 Bibliography : listed (not reproduced) in the exhibition catalog Antonio Segui, Kunstpreis der Stadt Darmstadt 1967, Kunsthalle Darmstadt, August 22 - September 28, 1969, no. 24, p. 29. Provenance: - 1969: Galerie Claude Bernard, Paris The year 1964 was a very good year for the Argentine artist who had been living in the Paris region for two years, in Arcueil. After his many formative journeys in Europe, Africa, Central and South America - where he learned painting as well as sculpture and engraving - France became his home. In 1962 he had already made a name for himself at the Paris Biennial, exhibiting collages mixing photography and painting. Two years later, he was honored in two Parisian galleries: Jeanne Bucher (managed at the time by Jean-François Jaeger, rue de Seine) and Claude Bernard (in the heart of Saint-Germain des Prés). International recognition: he exhibited the same year at the XXXII Venice Biennale. In his plastic creations of 1964, the recurring motif is that of the character expressive to the extreme, mouth wide open (laughing or sticking out his tongue), endowed with a hallucinatory look, oscillating between humor and grotesque. Undulating bands of color similar to those in our work appear in Melenita de oro [Golden Mane], oil on canvas, 22.5 x 32.5 cm, signed and dated "Seguí 64" on the reverse, Sotheby's Amsterdam sale of 03/22/2005, lot no. 345. We find these figures grimacing and sneering in a large oil on canvas, untitled, 198 x 150 cm, signed and dated lower left, sold at Cornette de Saint-Cyr, Paris-Drouot, on 28/10/2000, lot no. 67. Figures without a defined body, these humorous characters are reminiscent of gargoyles as well as childish caricatures, half-human and half-animal (hence the title referring to the "Zoología"). In his early years, Seguí was fascinated by the German expressionist Otto Dix and the German painter and caricaturist Georg Grosz, a prominent member of Dada. However, the Argentine was always careful to chart his own course, keeping his distance from contemporary artistic movements and defining himself as "neo-marginal". He died on February 26, 2022 in Buenos Aires. Virginie Journiac, Certified Expert CECOA, FNEPSA and CEDEA
