Placarded in BAYONNE (Handwritten subscription signed by CRUAX) "the Establishment of the Republic on the debris of an old Monarchy, the Salvation of the People in the midst of numerous enemies, the preservation of France through treason, perfidy and civil war, commanded the Government to take extraordinary and violent measures... It is time for individual passions to give way to the general interest, to public instruction. The French will not lose in vain quarrels the advantage of five years of thrift, patience and courage: they are cultivating the tree of liberty without yet calculating what its fruit will cost. But let aristocracy and malevolence be firmly called to order; let the people no longer tire of their unjust complaints; let the revolution, which was but a stormy sea, soon bring us to the port of equality to the reign of laws."
