Antonio de Bellis, attribué à (vers 1616 - 1656)
The sacrifice of Abraham Toile 63.5 x 50 cm Little information about the life of Antonio de Belli has reached us. Born around 1616 in Naples, then a student of Massimo Stanzione, he was active as a baroque painter between 1630 and 1660, and is known in particular for a series of paintings depicting The Life of Saint Charles, major works of his production, which are still found today in the church of San Carlo alle Mortele in Naples. Our painting represents all the characteristics of Belli, both naturalist in the purest Neapolitan tradition and talented colourist, combining sophisticated colours with a pure concern for elegance. By its sobriety, its originality in the choice of composition and dramatic intensity, each element of the painting provokes emotion and compassion in the spectator.
