GOLDEN COAST. 1746. CHARTERERER OF LUGNY... - Lot 153 - Vermot et Associés
GOLDEN COAST. 1746. CHARTERERER OF LUGNY - Dom Antoine de GOULARD, Prior of the Chartreuse de Lugny (near Chatillon-sur-Seine) Letter A.S., 2 p grand in-8 plus page of address, Lugny, February 22, 1746, to Monsieur Bernard, painter in DIJON[craftsman who was involved in the embellishment work of the church of the Carthusian monastery undertaken by the Prior Goulard]: The transcription was made in modern spelling for a better understanding: "I am still waiting for a convenience to send you the 25 pounds that you were kind enough to pay for me for the 8 alders of red caddis[wool cloth]. My desire to do you a favour forces me to ask you to take an old piece of oak wood that time has made completely dark - to paint and varnish half of it as you did the bossing of our church. I will take it to Lyon to show it to Dom prior and to three or four of our confreres who have magnificent churches where all that is missing is your varnish. The piece must be only 8 to 9 inches long and about four inches wide, not wanting to load me, having only one coat rack, with a large piece of wood. Moreover, it is enough if we see 5 to 6 inches of colors, and the rest of black color to see the beautiful effect it can have. If it is convenient for you, I would be delighted to render you my services and to mark on you on every occasion the perfect consideration with which I have the honour of being, Sir, your most humble and obedient servant".
