Placarded in BAYONNE (Handwritten subscription signed CRUAX) "the Establishment of the Republic on the debris of an old Monarchy, the Salvation of the People in the midst of many enemies, the preservation of France through treachery, perfidy & civil wars, ordered the Government to take extraordinary and violent measures . It is time for individual passions to give way to the general interest, to public education. The French will not lose in vain quarrels the advantage of five years of economy, patience and courage: they are cultivating the tree of liberty without yet calculating the cost of its fruit. But let the aristocracy and malevolence be firmly called to order; let the people no longer be tired of their unjust complaints, and let the revolution, which was but a stormy sea, soon bring us to the port of equality and to the reign of the laws."
