Robert MARTIN: They killed the poet. Tribute to Robert Brasillach. Etching on 19 x 25 cm paper (three traces of folds, tiny scorching marks). Rare artist's proof, dated 1955, captioned and hand-dedicated in pencil by the artist. On the back, a very long and beautiful letter signed by the artist located in Algiers on March 30, 1955. A photocopy of an article by Jean Brune on Robert Martin is attached. Born in 1915 in Tiaret, Algeria, Robert Martin firstly headed towards an artistic career: he was a student at the Beaux-Arts in Algiers and then in Paris in 1938. Back in Oran, he decides to open with his wife Manette in 1941, he inaugurated the "Colline" bookstore gallery, which he inaugurated with an exhibition devoted to Jean Launois and whose catalogue will be prefaced by George Elgozy. Having become a professor at the Beaux-Arts d'Oran, Robert Martin exhibited for more than 20 years, the greatest artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Utrillo, Raoul Dufy, Maurice Vlaminck in 1942 or Maurice Brianchon and Kostia Terechkovitch. Robert Martin will also have at heart to defend the Algerian artistic creation with painters of the Villa ABD-EL-TIF such as André Hamburg or Adelkader Guermaz but also Spanish republican refugee painters such as Orlando Pelayo and Antoni Clavé.
