- 1791. CLUB DES CORDELIERS DE PARIS or the Société des Amis des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen. Signed letter to the Free Citizens and Friends of the Constitution of POITIERS. 18 October 1791. 1p (35.5 x 24). "Brothers and Friends. We have received with pleasure, your printed letter of the 4th of this month, which is then found of what you call the act or rather the monument you raise to the glory of our Benefactors. We like to see you, as we do, pay homage to the true Fathers of the Fatherland, the homage that every good citizen, every venerable friend of the People, owes them. But, allow us to tell you, public opinion has long since pronounced on the men whose names you recall. The Club des Cordeliers, which has been able to free itself from reproducing old errors and shake off all prejudices, is careful not to deify so suddenly. It maintains that it is by lavishing the name of Grand that it is withered. The name of a ROBESPIERRE, of a PÉTION, of a GRÉGOIRE, must capture the admiration, even the veneration, the soul of every good Frenchman, and kindle in his heart the sacred fire of the love of Man and of the Fatherland. But among the others you recall, many cannot be placed on the same line, and the rest do not deserve the honours of a quotation. Let us be stingy with apotheosis. To deserve it, we need virtues that are rare and far above the mediocre; let us count for something the gentleness and Peace enjoyed by the soul of a Citizen who has done something good. This is his first reward. But he owed it to his brothers; and not everyone can say to himself, I did as much good as I had to and as much as I could. We are with the most sincere brotherhood. E.J.B. MAILLARD President."
