Burin, J.-P. / Cluseau-Lanauve
VISAGES DU STALAG One of the 948 copies on vellum, numbered from 53 to 1000 (on sale number 893). Published in Paris, by Arc-en-Ciel, in 1943. Containing illustrations by Cluseau-Lanauve and covered with a brocaded cover. Well preserved copy: small rubbing on the headdresses. Slight play in the hinge. Fresh, freckle-free interior. The author of the text and the illustrator, both former prisoners of war, tell the story of the soldiers' shared destiny behind the barbed wire of the Stalag. So all the names of people and places disappear, giving way to a watered-down view of life in captivity from which the Germans are absent. This ordeal is, according to the author, overcome by love of the Fatherland, devotion to the "one leader with seven stars" and thanks to strong friendships between prisoners of war. From their arrival at the Stalag until their liberation, Burin recounts in a poetic and somewhat melancholy way the daily life of the soldiers: the registration, the medical examination, the toilet, the barracks, the meals, the prayers, the armies' theatre and the rumours.
