Séraphin Couvreur (Chinese: 顧賽芬; pinyin: GU Saifen, January 14, 1835-1819 November 1919) was a French Jesuit missionary in China, sinologist and creator of the EFEO Chinese transcription. The system developed by Couvreur de l'École française d'Extrême-Orient was used in most French-speaking countries with Chinese transliteration until the middle of the 20th century, after which it was gradually replaced by pinyin .
