JARRY, Alfred
MESSALINE - Original edition, published in Paris, by Editions de la Revue Blanche, in 1901. Covered with a brocaded cover. Fairly well-preserved copy: usual rubbing on the headdresses, bit a little cracked. Slight play in the hinge. Pages a little yellowed with some light freckles. Alfred Jarry, born in Laval (Mayenne) on 8 September 1873 and died in Paris on 1 November 19073, is a French poet, novelist, writer and playwright. He is also a draughtsman and engraver. Valeria Messalina was the third wife of the Roman Emperor Claudius and gave birth to Britannicus. Her scandalous conduct and unbridled debauchery eventually led to her downfall. Suspected of plotting against the emperor, she was summarily executed in 1948.
