MR SPONGES SPORTING TOUR - First edition, containing 14 colour etchings out of text and woodcuts abundant in the text, by John Leech. Published in London by Bradbury, Agnew & Co. in 1852. Covered in full red cloth publisher's cardboard with pretty gold and cold gold ornaments on the spine and plates. Fairly well-preserved copy: usual rubbing on the caps and spine. Play in the hinge. Interior fairly cool with some light freckles. Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 - 16 March 1864) was an English publisher, novelist and sports writer, widely known as RS Surtees . He was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, a member of an old family from County Durham. He is remembered for his invented character of Jorrocks, a vulgar but good-natured sports cockney grocer. John Leech (29 August 1817 - 29 October 1864 in London) was an English cartoonist and illustrator1. He is best known for his participation in Punch, a humorous magazine of political satire, and then as the illustrator of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
