MOORE Thomas
Travels of an Irish gentleman in search of religion. First edition of the English translation. Published in Paris, by Gaume Frères, in 1833. Covered in a full basane binding with a smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons and a title piece. And marbled edges. A fairly well preserved copy: some rubbing on the headdresses. Bite a little cracked. Solid hinge. Fresh inside with some light freckles. Thomas Moore (born in Dublin May 28, 1779 - died at Sloperton Cottage [archive] (Bromham, Wiltshire, England) February 25, 1852) was an Irish poet. He travelled in Europe, notably to Venice, where Byron entrusted him with his diary. Between 1820 and 1822, he was welcomed in Sèvres near Paris by the family of Martin de Villamil. He is particularly known for his poems such as The Minstrel Boy (en) or The Last Rose of Summer (en) which, set to music by John Andrew Stevenson, are very much appreciated and have been reprised many times. His work made a great impression on the composer Hector Berlioz, who borrowed the term "melologist" from him.
