ESTIENNE (Ch.): VINETUM. in quo varia vitium, vuarum, vinoru - Lot 154
ESTIENNE (Ch.): VINETUM. in quo varia vitium, vuarum, vinorum, antiqua, latina vulgariae nomina...Paris, Stephanum, 1537. Small in-8 full modern burgundy morocco, back with ribs decorated with cold fillets, golden head (e.g. washed and glued). 73 ff, 14 ff of index and 1 ff of errata. Rare original edition of this treatise entirely devoted to wine and the vine, which was missing from the Fritsch, Chwartz and Fastes de Bacchus and Comus collections. The printer, physician and humanist Charles Estienne quotes many types of wines: Gascony, Anjou, Burgundy, Champagne, Soissons, Orleans, Beaune, Ysans, Bordeaux, Mâcon, Graves, Gaillac, Saint-Pourçain, etc. The book is followed by indexes of wine terms in French and Latin and an interesting catalogue of French crus, with their names in French and Latin, classified by province, city and town. Marked on the vine stock of François Estienne, Robert's son and Charles' nephew, woodcut with the title. In 1554, this treaty will be collected with others in the Prædium rusticum, "the embryo of what, after many increases and transformations, will become the famous Maison rustique d'Estienne et Liébault" (Oberlé, Fastes, n°606). A very fine example.
