Cycling. Tour 1912/Photo cart/H.Alavoine... - Lot 125 - Vermot et Associés
Cycling. Tour 1912/Photo cart/H.Alavoine (1890-1916). Fabulous photo card of the control of Gisors (km 228) in the last stage of the Tour (317km), which Jean Alavoine will win. It is his brother Henry, who sends it a month later to Fernande. He returned to his barracks, as he was on leave on the Tour. He is a legend himself: it is the 1, Maitron, the 2, Cornet, the 3, and the Belgian Maurice Leliaert, an isolated man like him, the 4. Curiosity of the race, the two lone riders closing the race, flank two big names, Maitron from Automoto and Nevers, and especially Cornet from Le Globe and Le Mans. Cornet, the winner of the 1904 Tour, was lagging behind, because he had been operated on by badly placed boils, he suffered, despite his humour, and the cotton overflowing from his shorts. The merry Henry, ranked 38th out of 41, will die during the Great War while learning to fly. The corporal was 26 years old and had a beautiful handwriting. Perfect condition. One of a kind.
