Olympic Games. Paris/Chamonix, 1924. EXCEPTIONAL... - Lot 299 - Vermot et Associés
Olympic Games. Paris/Chamonix, 1924. EXCEPTIONAL portfolio: "1001 champions, VIII Olympiad" by Alois Derso (1888-1964), Imre Kelen (1896-1978), two great Hungarian graphic designers and Strobl. Created for the 1924 Olympics (summer and winter), this set (trilingual, French, English, German), with a sparkling Coubertin opening, offers in 32 large double-sided pages, i.e. in 64 lithographed plates (29x37.5), a joyful and just pantheon of all, all the heroes of these double Games. Here we find Nurmi, Weissmuller, Andrade, Padou, the Hungarian swordsmen, the Hawaiian swimmers, the Uruguayan or Egyptian footballers as never seen before. Indeed, the champions are not only crunched, but also often staged in humorous sketches (the American bar, etc.). This garland is not for all that devoid of critical sense, and one speaks about "Olympic circus", like very silver amateur footballers !!! Géo André takes the oath and opens the athletics theme ( 17 boards), football offers 12, swimming 8, like the Chamonix Games, wrestling and boxing are entitled to 4, and fencing with Gaudin, to 3, like tennis with Lenglen. Equestrian sports deserve two boards, rugby (what a scrimmage), cycling, weightlifting may be one, but it's worth the detour. Like the boards dedicated to the organizing committee, the press, the autographs of the champions or the balance sheet. It is truly international and all nations are omnipresent here. This set, which would have been drawn in only 5 copies, with 2, including this one that has survived the passage of time, could be developed in a fabulous exhibition. Cover repaired, but preserved for this illustrated bible of the 1924 Games. Piece of museum or high collection. Emery Kelen, who starred in "Le Miroir des Sports" and in "L'Auto", worked at the United Nations, like his compatriot Derso.
