DAMAS (Ange, Hyacinthe, Mayence, Gustave de) Paris 1785 - 1862
General, Minister, 1st Aide de Camp of Prince Jérôme Napoleon, Minister of Foreign Affairs in place of CHATEAUBRIAND, then Governor of the young Duke of BORDEAUX (Henri V) May 1828 and followed him after the events of 1830 in his Exile: Long Autograph Letter signed from EXIL to LAUSANNE, to Mr GRANIER Editor of LA GLANEUSE in Lyon, 29 November (1832) - 3 pp in-4°. "“.. I thought, on leaving the Fatherland, to come and settle temporarily in a free country almost neighbouring mine, that I would be delivered from the prisons, persecutions, and investigations of the execrable agent of the execrable PHILIPPE, but it is not so; Mr. VIDOC followed me to LAUSANNE, and the secret funds placed at his disposal to establish in this city an occult police force, as well against the CARLISTS as against the Patriots, are beginning to produce their effect... DECAZES had invented the insidious maneuver of dividing the Patriots by making them suspicious of each other... Poor France! Does she still have a long time to groan dishonored and ruined under the yoke of an assembly of rulers as hideous as each other? I don't know; but I hope every day and I suffer from not being able to give my life to break her irons" (Excerpt).
