NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Exceptional and rare photograph of astronaut BRUCE MC CANDLESS taken in 1984 during mission STS-41B of the Space Shuttle Challenger. This iconographic image illustrates the first spacewalk with the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), an autonomous maneuvering system for the astronaut. Bruce McCandless helped develop this system before testing it himself in low Earth orbit. Thanks to gases ejected from the nozzles, he was able to move about 100 metres away from the Shuttle, without any tethers or umbilicals. With this photo, he had become an icon, although his face is not visible. As he said in a 2005 interview, "I have the sun visor [on my suit helmet], so you can't see my face, and that means it could be anybody up there. It's like a representation, not of Bruce McCandless, but of Humanity." The photographic print also features a perfect signature of astronaut Bruce McCandless in the lower right-hand corner, with the mythical number "STS-41B", which alone symbolizes to the women and men of the space universe one of the most significant human achievements in the history of the Space Conquest. February 7, 1984, chromogenic print on "KODAK" paper. 50.8 x 40.6CM with margins. NASA. LARGE FORMAT.
