1785. BORDEAUX (33). STRAY DOGS. "Ordonnance de MM. les Maire, Lieutenant-de-Maire et Jurats, Gouverneurs de BORDEAUX, Juges Criminels et de Police" (Header, vignette with Coat of Arms). Bordeaux on April 23, 1785. "... one meets day & night, in all the streets of the City, a multitude of dogs, which the majority throw themselves on the passers-by, & often cause them untoward accidents... the extreme dryness can make fear to see being born rabies at these animals... ". They enjoin all the inhabitants of BORDEAUX who have Dogs at home, to keep them locked up & tied up in their houses; make them inhibitions & defenses to let them go out & roam in the streets, under any pretext whatsoever, under penalty of 200 Livres of fine... Order that all the dogs which will be met wandering in the streets & abandoned to themselves, will be killed on the spot...".
