NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Rare. This image of NGC 346 and the star formation around it was taken by Hubble's Advanced Camera using a filter that isolates the light emitted by hydrogen. Individual images taken by Hubble's cameras retain no colour information as such, other than the colour of a filter, which selects a range of wavelengths from the full spectrum of light. A black and white (monochrome) image more realistically represents the range of brightness of such a single image. Color images can be reconstructed by combining several images made with different filters and assigning a distinct color to each image. Even without the added color dimension, the wide range of gray tones in the black and white image reveals much of the finely detailed structure of the nebula. 2004.Vintage silver print. Legend on label on back. 50.8 x 40.6CM with margins.
