PRISON OF LA ROCHELLE (17). 1817. Letter... - Lot 311 - Vermot et Associés
PRISON OF LA ROCHELLE (17). 1817. Letter signed VALLETTE Military detained in the Military Prison of La Rochelle in the Department of the Charente Inférieure, Oct. 3, 1817, to his dear Mother the widow VALLETTE in BOURG de l'AIN (Address and M.P.) - 1p in-4° - He informs her that his health is not very good. "I will teach you for news which are not very good that I was in the 2nd Colonial Battalion. I have had the misfortune to desert... I am now being brought before the Council of War to be judged and I hope very much that I will be acquitted. I am dear father and mother in extreme poverty, reduced to the last misery, having no shirt on my back, no shoes on my feet, finally having only a pound of extremely black bread to eat, water to drink lying on a bale of straw. Penetrate how much your son's fate is to be pitied in spite of the fact that I sought him out but it was only after the unjust punishments I received every (day) that I tried to desert, but my intentions were to return to service in a regiment considered by the Government and not in a punishment Battalion." He asks her for some money to cover her nakedness... Your devoted son VALLETTE.
