ALGERIA - Rare document of 1847, pre-colonization. On December 21, 1847 takes place the surrender of Abd-el-Kader, Algeria and in 1848 Algeria is annexed in French department. A. Rossière of Avignon had founded in 1847 a company for the exploitation of the concession of 5000 hectares of land in the valley of Cheliff below Milianah: Contract partly printed (2 p in-4, state B), filled in by hand and signed by Rossière, headed "Colonization of Algeria", established in Avignon on December 12, 1847, by which Jacques Chabert of Rognonas (13) commits himself to be a part of the "Company of Colonization in Algeria" organized by M. Rossière, "to bring my wife and my children", as head of a farm with an interest of 30 hectares, "to devote all my time to it for ten years". For 2 years he will work in common with the other colonists, maintained at the expense of the Society, the third year, he will be allocated with 14 other colonists a farm of 290 ha which they will cultivate together, 3/5 of the income belonging to them, the others 2/5 for the Society. The future settler commits himself to bring to the Company 6000 francs. In subscription, Rossière specifies well that this contract will become final only the day when the Ordinance of concession will have been returned
