Cycling / Bib / Luxembourg / Circuit des... - Lot 161 - Vermot et Associés
Cycling / Bib / Luxembourg / Circuit des Champs de Bataille / 1919. Amazing bib in waterproof canvas, with the number 13 in black stencil. Belgian military stamp (Sureté Militaire Belge), and handwritten mention "Seen at the SMB, Luxembourg, on 30 / 4 / 19, signature illegible". One of the oldest known bibs. Probably one of the bibs for the 2nd stage (April 30, 1919) Luxembourg-Brussels, of the terrible Circuit des Champs de Bataille (April 28-May 11, 1919, from Strasbourg to Strasbourg in 7 stages, organized by "Le Petit Journal", Alphonse Steinès, and Marcel Allain). The most terrible and symbolic race of all times, won by the Belgian Charles Deruyter. 17,5x18,5. Museum piece. Very rare. In fact, after investigation, this bib was intended for the Picardy rider Germain Titran (1893-1951), who finished 67th of the first stage (the 275 km at more than 3 hours of the winner in Luxembourg, Oscar Egg). Exhausted by this effort, Germain, who at that time lived in Saint Souplet in the North, did not leave Luxembourg the next day for Brussels, and his number was thus preserved, until now. This is perhaps the only known trace of this historic event, that of rebirth and recognition.
