Movement numbered 4.552.180 (circa 1913) Case numbered 5.672.904 (circa 1915) Diameter: 50 mm Interesting version of the "standard" pocket chronograph, but with a 15-minute chronograph totalizer, allowing to measure short times, as in sports events. Its double graduation, from 1 to 12 hours in black and from 13 to 24 hours in red, also embellishes this enamel dial in very good condition. Condition report: Good general condition, good condition of the dial, scratches from use and patina on the case, the watch works at the time of the expertise, without guarantee of functioning in time, a revision of use advised. Precision on the terms Chronograph and Chronometer : - Chronograph : mechanical or electronic measuring instrument allowing to count a time, often by means of a hand or one/several counters (seconds, minutes or hours). It can be mechanical (manual or automatic) or quartz. A chronograph, literally "Time (chronos) written (graph)", can be certified Chronometer. - Chronometer: mechanical or electronic measuring instrument that has undergone the tests of the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), installed since 1973 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, to verify the precision of movements and assembled watches. These tests are carried out over 14 to 20 days and are independent of the brands. If the watch passes these tests, it is then "Chronometer Certified". A chronometer can be a three-hand watch, a chronograph, a watch with complications... The first modern Olympic Games, as we know them, took place in Athens in 1896. Nine sports, ten disciplines, fourteen countries represented, forty three events, contested by two hundred and forty one athletes. This enumeration could be compared to the reading of a time. Because to decide between the competitors during the events, it is often necessary to calculate times. From 1932 and the Los Angeles Olympic Games, Omega became the official timekeeper, whether the competitions were summer or winter. For this, the Swiss manufacture must provide judges and referees, chronographs chronometers capable of measuring very accurately short times. This is why pocket watches of large diameter, to facilitate the reading, will be equipped with split-second function, graduations to 1/5 of a second, counter making a turn of the dial in 30 seconds... The Olympic Games are showcases of Omega's expertise around the world. Even before modern communication, timekeeping results appeared with the name of the brand founded by the Brandt family. To this day, all Olympic competitions are still measured by Omega. With the progress linked to the development of specific products, the brand from Bienne will exploit and make the general public benefit from these innovations. The lots presented in this section of the sale were searched for at length by Joël Duval. They often bear the inscription "Olympic" and may have been used in the timing of sporting events. Others are linked to the history of the modern Games, such as the Seamaster Albatros watch, released for the Montreal Games in 1976, equipped with a quartz module allowing the timing of 1/100th of a second. Commemorative or special series have also been produced for nearly 50 years. Even though electronic and video equipment has progressively replaced mechanical measuring instruments, these pocket or wrist chronographs are part of the history between sports and watchmaking. For several years, the Vermot et Associés firm has been offering sales dedicated to sports and the Olympic world, entitled "Sportlympique". In 2022, the firm Vermot et Associés, in its "Sportlympique" sale VIII, sold numerous Olympic torches. The lots and information sheets are available on the firm's website.
