NASA. Ission VIKING 1. Rare. One of the first historical views of the Martian soil from the surface of the planet MARS by the VIKING 1 spacecraft. The large rock just left of center is about 2 meters wide. This rock was named "Big Joe" by Viking scientists. The reddish color of the rocks and soil is due to an abundance of oxidized iron in the fine-grained weathering products of the rocks. This high-resolution synthetic color image was created by combining low-resolution standard color images of Viking Lander with high-resolution standard black-and-white images of Viking Lander. using image processing techniques. The colors of the image were balanced to approximate what a person would see on Mars. Since the Martian atmosphere carries extremely fine-grained red dust in suspension the "on Mars" images are redder.Vintage chromogenic print/NASA rematriation. Caption on back label. 25.4 X 20.4CM with margins.
