NASA. LARGE PANORAMIC FORMAT. Rare. Apollo 17 mission. Panorama of Station 4, taken by astronaut Jack Schmitt standing 40 meters to the west, next to the lunar rover, at the edge of the 110-meter wide Shorty Crater. Cernan spent about two minutes taking 37 side-by-side photos. These images were used to create several panoramic site views of Station 4, which was visited during the second of three lunar walks on the Apollo 17 mission. The lunar soil is faintly tinted orange between the lunar rover and the large rock behind it, as well as on the sloping interior walls of the crater. This hue comes from tiny orange glass beads, 3.7 billion years old, created by volcanic fire fountains. They were buried in the ground and then excavated by the impact of Shory Crater 20 to 30 million years ago. The low mountain directly behind the lunar rover is Family Mountain, 6 kilometers away. December 1972. Posterior chromogenic print. Legend on label on the back. 40 X 100CM with margins.
