BEAUMARCHAIS: Observations on the justifying memorandum of the Court of London. London and Philadelphia, 1779. Large booklet in-12, stapled, with a blank post cover, 56 pages (qq very slight traces of moisture). One of the editions published in 1779; Cordier lists an edition of 68 pages and we have also seen an edition with 64 pages and no place of publication on the title page. The work was condemned on December 19, 1779 and suppressed. It is a refutation of the accusation raised by the British government in the Justifying Memorandum written by E. Gibbon. It is a recital of French and American grievances against Great Britain and a justification of French policy" (Echeverria Wilkie). This work by Beaumarchais deals with French aid to the American colonies in their struggle against Britain. Precious copy bearing at the bottom of the title page this mention in Beaumarchais' hand : " From the author ".
