MUCHA (Alphonse): The Father. Commentary... - Lot 184 - Vermot et Associés
MUCHA (Alphonse): The Father. Commentary and compositions by A.M. Mucha. Champenois and Piazza, 1899. In-folio (400 x 295 mm) full turquoise jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, large lace framing the counter covers, counter covers and endpapers of two-tone moire with stylized shamrock pattern, gilt edges, cover preserved (Petrus Ruban, 1909). Spine slightly faded. First edition of this sumptuous work illustrated with a lithographed title in colors, 8 chromolithographed plates, 7 pages of text with lithographed borders in colors, 7 reproductions of paintings and various illustrated leaves in colors. The work is printed in lithography. A pivotal work in the career of Alfons Mucha, who declared that this book was his masterpiece and that he had put all his soul into it (The Sun Newspaper, January 5, 1900) and which, in fact, constitutes his greatest success. At the end of the 1890s, then recognized as one of the masters of Art Nouveau, Mucha deviated for a while from the numerous commissions that beset him to realize the "Pater", a personal work, of a complex symbolism where his exuberant decorative style, used for the plates in colors, mixes with the much more realistic and darker touch of the plates drawn in black. Edition at 510 copies. 1/400 on Marais, of a perfect interior freshness, in a superb contemporary binding signed Petrus Ruban. A very nice copy.
