COIFFURE - Pauline GARNERAY - Artist-painter,... - Lot 236 - Vermot et Associés
COIFFURE - Pauline GARNERAY - Artist-painter, pupil of her father Jean-François Garneray (1755-1837, pupil of David), her three brothers were also painters: Louis (1783-1857, who before devoting himself to painting was a privateer and companion of Surcouf), Auguste (1784-1824) and Hippolyte (1787-1858, who lived for a long time in Texas) - Notoriety has not preserved her first name (we do not even know her dates with any certainty) but in this very masculine universe of painters, Pauline had a very active artistic place: she worked with her father and her brother Auguste, taking care of the finishing touches of their paintings (and executing copies), which left little room for her own works (we know mainly her subjects of flowers) / The work presented is a youthful work, from the time when she was the pupil of her father then in full glory, she dated it 1813, we can estimate that she was then about fifteen years old: original watercolor on paper (18.5 x 23.5 cm, pasted by 4 points on sheet 22.5 x 31 cm) executed, signed and dated by her hand - Pauline "sketches" a cross of the time: the fashion of hairstyles always higher: the hairdresser is obliged to work with stilts!
