NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Historic mission of the space shuttle Challenger (STS 41B). 1st flight of a free man in Space without attachment. Astronaut Bruce McCandless photographed during an extravehicular activity (EVA), taken from inside the rear flight deck of the space shuttle. He uses his hands to control his movement in space while using the nitrogen-powered maneuvering unit (MMU). McCandless floats without the tethers that connect him to the shuttle, getting so close that the reflection of the shuttle in McCandless' helmet can be seen.
