Wrestling/Leander. Lithograph of groups of... - Lot 238 - Vermot et Associés
Wrestling/Leander. Lithograph of groups of wrestlers warming up, circa 1902. This work gives a good idea of the genius of the master of Champsecret, Léandre (1862-1934) sees further, and sketches the truth. The truth in this period of black misery, are the shows of "mastodon" wrestlers, who confront each other in Paris simultaneously in two or three different halls, with big names and world titles in spades, as in boxing today. It lasts 20, 30, 40 evenings, the bosses of the Folies Bergère, of the Patapon circus or of the Casino de Paris are as happy as the bosses of the newspapers that these interminable serials sell. These are no longer agricultural shows as in Normandy, but athletic shows, with an aftertaste of bestiary. Fortunately, the wrestlers are sometimes beautiful (not here), and the fights are quite dignified. To make ends meet, or even make a fortune on occasion, these guys will also lift weights (often rigged), or a cannon. This terrible and brutal composition almost sums up a vaguely sporting world, which has extenuating circumstances. A masterpiece. 37,5x54,5. Slight foxing, tear on the right with trace of tape.
