Olympic Games/Paris, summer 1900/Cricket/RCF/McEvoy.... - Lot 250 - Vermot et Associés
Olympic Games/Paris, summer 1900/Cricket/RCF/McEvoy. Extremely rare silver plate (5,8x4,2) (hallmark and mention on the edge) attributed to Arthur Mac Evoy (1868-1904), Olympic vice-champion of cricket in a mixed Anglo-French team from Paris. The 12 Parisians of Tomalin are dominated by the English (Devon County Wanederers), and the titles of Olympic champions for the latter and vice-champions for the Parisians will be recognized in 1912 by the IOC. It will be the only appearance of the cricket in the Games, from where the interest of this beautiful plate. Arthur had been a great soccer goalkeeper at Standard, then at Racing. And in 1904, he had just moved to the Stade. At the time of his funeral, all matches were suspended. Obverse: The Victory, with the words "République Française, Paris 1900, Exposition Universelle". Reverse: The Winning Athlete, with on the lower cartouche, the mention "Concours des Jeux Athlétiques", and engraved in black, the name of the recipient "Arthur Mac Evoy". This is a very rare set, because here, on the one hand, it is a question of cricket, a sport in the calendar of these so-called Athletic Games, not to say Olympic, and yet almost never mentioned, directly or not. On the other hand, the name of a recipient is very, very rarely given, and there, we have in all letters, with Arthur Mac Evoy, that of a versatile athlete having nicely participated in this unique tournament of cricket disputed on the lawn of the Velodrome of Vincennes on August 19 and 20, 1900.The author of this beautiful double work (obverse and reverse) is none other than a first Grand Prix de Rome in 1887, Mr. Frederic de Vernon (1858-1912), student of Jules Chaplain (1839-1909) another Grand Prix de Rome, author of the first Olympic medals for 1896). Museum piece.
