NASA. America's Bicentennial emblem sent into the VIKING 1 space orbiter returned to Earth by Radio transmission on July 3, 1976 from a distance of 203 million miles. The photograph was taken on June 12, 1975 by one of the Orbiter's two television cameras during pre-launch testing at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The VIKING 1 space probe was launched on August 20, 1975 and reached the orbit of the planet Mars on June 19, 1976. The Red, White and Blue star symbol of the bicentennial of the United States of America as a Nation was recorded 3 times through red, green and violet filters. All images were sent back to Earth and received at the Profong Space Network in Canberra, Australia and relayed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The color was reconstructed at the JPL Image Processing Laboratory. The Bicentennial emblem was also affixed to the VIKING 1 Mars lander.
