LETTER OF ANOBLISSEMENT AND REGULATION OF ARMORES. 2 Pieces: Letter of ennoblement in favor of Sieur Thomas Adrien NIEL, Knight of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis, Former Commander of the Battalion of Saint-Marc and presently Commander of the District of Petite Rivière, Island and Coast of Saint Domingue, Signed by King LOUIS XVI (Secretary), countersigned by César Henri de LA LUZERNE (Secretary of State of the Navy.), "desiring to recognize the zeal and fidelity of those of his subjects who have distinguished themselves in our service in our Colonies of the AMERICA. Given in VERSAILLES in January 1788. Parchment (50 x 76 cm) with Coat of Arms painted in the center. "The Sieur Thomas Adrien NIEL served 45 years in the Militias of our Colonies, including 27 years in the Staff. He was, in 1748, part of the detachment that was sent to Saint-Louis to help the fort that the English were besieging, employed for several years in the discipline and training of the Militia of his district, he contributed more than anyone else in 1768, during the troubles, to maintain it in obedience to our orders. It was he who provided the plans and memoranda that determined the execution of the Canal for the watering of the Plain of the Artibonite in Gonaïves;... The plans that he had drawn up for this coast are deposited with the Government of the Colony...
