Duc de MONTMORENCY-LAVAL (Mathieu)
Military, Deputy in 1789 by the Bailiwick of Montfort-L'Amaury, Peer of France, Minister and member of the French Academy (Paris 1766 - 1826) - Friendly letter A.S. from ROME (Italy) on August 4, 1823, to a Count (the name of the addressee has been cut off), from ROME on August 4, 1823: "I owe thanks, Mr. Count, to Mr. de MURAT, since your interest in him has procured for me a letter as perfectly kind as the one you have had the goodness to address to me in his favor. I have already put his zeal to the test by making him repeat the 400 places he had just covered. He will have been able to give an account himself to those who are interested in him of the welcome he received in Rome.... The reflections full of elevation and philosophy that you address to me, on this Queen of the cities, will have to sadden it well when you will have learned the Fire of St. Paul, which consumed in a few hours, the most ancient, the 1st Basilica of the Universe, more ancient than Ste Sophie and that the ancient mosque, today Cathedral of Cordova. I saw fallen and heaped in ruins, those magnificent columns of Egypt, which once adorned the mausoleum of Adrian. Although the Pope survives in a sort of supernatural way, to his deplorable accident, it is necessary however to think of a next Conclave... the memory of these ancient supports must forever maintain, and nourish between us the feelings of esteem and friendship..."
