BUGEAUD de la PICONNERIE (Thomas-Robert)
Marshal of France in 1843, Duke of ISLY (Limoges 1784 - Paris 1849 carried off by cholera) - Letter signed Marshal B. D'ISLY Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the ALPES (Heading printed) - LYON March 14, 1849. 2pp in-8° - Personal letter: "My dear Colonel, I have just had a long conference with Mr. Lieutenant RANDON; and I had the regret to note that he amply justified the opinion that you conceived of him. This officer, who is a socialist, a disciple of PROUD'HON, and a propagandist of those ideas which are entirely contrary to the laws and the constitution of the country, did not seem to me to understand what was irreconcilable between his active role as a social revolutionary agent and the fulfillment of his military duties, which from one moment to the next could call upon him to fight against those whom he calls his brothers... I have decided to ask Mr. Minister of War to withdraw his employment or to send him back to Africa..."
