Marc Alfred CHATAUD
French Orientalist painter, considered as one of the founders of the School of Algiers (1833-1908). Autograph letter signed from ALGIERS, July 1872, to André Marius GUINDON, Painter, rue Lepic (in MONTMARTRE), about the draft of several paintings from life in Algeria: "... I stayed only a short time in Marseille... The day before my departure, I saw my friend GERVAIS who gave me a letter from you where I saw that GOUPIL had asked for my and my receipts to withdraw my paintings from the Salon. I think that it is to make the photograph of the small painting. I have just written to BREST about this and I renew my recommendation not to give it to Madame BOICHARD in case she should ask for it. Give her good reasons... I was also pleased to see in your letter that the sale at the MONTPELLIER Exhibition had been completed. Has your presence in my studio, that is to say your proximity to BREST, changed your relations? I have been in Algiers for a few days, but I have not yet gone to Nature, having wanted to sketch several of the small paintings I want to do. I have, however, made several visits to the city and I got my hands on a most curious Arab oven. This will be my first study this week. There is something very curious and very pretty to do... In case you have something to tell me, please write to me at Mustapha Superior in ALGIERS..."
