Marshal MARMONT (Auguste Frédéric Louis Viesse de) Marshal of the Empire, Duke of Ragusa (Châtillon-sur-Seine/ Côte d'Or 1774 - 1852) - Autograph letter signed "Le Mal Duc de Raguse", in Exile in VIENNA (Austria) on April 25, 1838, addressed to Mr. le Comte de BIANCOURT in Paris (envelope enclosed). 3 pages in-4°: He learns of the death of the good and kind Valentin Esterhazy and then speaks about his work: "The benevolent way in which the public welcomed the publication of my trip decided me to give them a supplement, the trip to Sicily: joined together by this pretty walk, my dear Count, I had to put us in scene and I hope that you will not be angry with me. I also hope that you will approve of what I say about this country, which is generally so little known. This time spent with you and in your intimacy will always remain among my wonderful memories... " - Marmont then decides to undertake a whole series of journeys through Europe and to publish the accounts of them. He was in Hungary (1832), Switzerland (1833), Italy (1833), Egypt, Turkey and Persia (1834-1835), Italy (1835) before returning to Vienna in 1836 to write and publish "Travels of the Duke of Ragusa" published in 1837 and 1838.
