CARÊME, Antonin: Le pâtissier pittoresque,... - Lot 57 - Vermot et Associés
CARÊME, Antonin: Le pâtissier pittoresque, containing one hundred and twenty-five line-engraved plates, of which one hundred and ten represent a variety of modems of pavilions, rotundas, temples, ruins, towers, belvederes, forts, waterfalls, fountains, pleasure houses, thatched cottages, mills, and hermitages, preceded by a line of the five orders of architecture, according to Vignole; to which one joined details of the orders Cariatides, poestum, Egyptian, Chinese and Gothic; drawn from the work of M. Durand, parallèle des monuments antiques et modernes. Paris, ed. Firmin Didot, 1828, 3rd edition, revised and enlarged, in-8, half dark brown chagrin, dark brown and dark pink marbled paper boards, fillets, garlands, gilt author and title on smooth spine, period binding, 66 pp, illus. of 126 full-page plates (1 frontispiece, 123 plates and 2 unnumbered plates with 16 figures), all drawn by Carême, a few caps, signature in ink of Carême on verso of the title page, Epitre dédicatoire à Monsieur Muller, l'un des maîtres d'hôtel, controleur de la Maison de sa Majestée l'Empereur de toutes les Russies, avertissement, indication des planches, table des matières. Mostly original edition (the first one dates from 1815) since it is enriched with the analysis of a great number of pavilions, two plates of details, new ornaments to the roiginal drawings and ten new plates of Egyptian, Moorish, Gothic and Spanish pavilions replacing other drawings deleted by Carême. "It is a true treatise on pastry architecture, inspired by Vignole. Carème drew all the plates himself and engraved them by Normand. This book is the first to be illustrated by Carème!". The book is well covered by the signature of the author. The best edition of this work. VERY RARE. Very good condition of the binding with a few very small scratches on the spine; scattered but present foxing.
