ISNARD, Léon: L'Afrique gourmande. Culinary... - Lot 145 - Vermot et Associés
ISNARD, Léon: L'Afrique gourmande. Culinary Encyclopedia of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. Oran, ed. L. Fouque, S.d. (c 1923 or 24), 2nd edition, partly ORIGINAL EDITION, in-8, half-percaline "brick" cardboard with marbled paper boards "pebbles" in pinks, black and gray, author and title gilt on white paper pasted on smooth spine, original front cover retained, contemporary binding, 212 pp. (instead of 213!), illustrated with11 out-of-text plates containing 3 drawings and 14 photos in black, caps, nb. period advertisements for food and drink (8 pp.), nb. menus and tables, "dictionary of the kitchen - gastronomic map of Africa by departments - table of contents), Super SENDING from the author to Prosper Montagné "to Mr. Prosper Montagné in communion of purpose and thought, in memory of my internship at the Grand Hotel Paris" signed L. Isnard and dated Mascara 13 - 12 - 1923 ? (illegible) on the bottom of the title page + Prosper Montagné's bookplate in black pasted on the back of the first cover. The author was a chef, owner and spice merchant. He and his brother owned the Grand Hotel Bourelly and the Royal Hotel in Mascara, Algeria. This new edition is inspired by the first one of 1915, with the title "L'Algérie gourmande ou les secrets de cuisine et pâtisserie algériennes". This work was printed in 5,000 copies and was quickly sold out! For the new edition, the author added new recipes for Algeria but also for Tunisia and Morocco, which also makes it an original edition! This new edition includes more photographs as well as new recipes. This book is about the cuisine of the whole Maghreb and is therefore the first book to be printed on the subject. The gastronomic "maps" of Africa are not exactly maps, but an enumeration of the specialties of the departments in the main cities. There is also a chapter on food adulteration. Page 213 and the "blank" back of the table of contents are missing. This work is very RARE as such but is UNIQUE by its Author's Envoi to Prosper Montagné and for the ex-libris of the latter. Very good condition of the binding; some restorations of the paper uniformly yellowed (attention it is a very fragile paper to handle); the first cover underwent the same inconveniences: losses of paper.
