JOIGNEAUX, Pierre - VAN HULLE, Hubert Jean...
(circa 1870, second edition and S.d. (circa 1863), ORIGINAL EDITION, in-12, dark green half calf, green and red marbled paper boards, fillets, rolls, garlands, gilt author and titles on 5-ribbed spine, speckled edges, late 19th century binding, 131 - (1) + 15 - (32 bl.) pp, table of contents for the Joigneaux, 1 folding black plate with 3 figures of greenhouse plantation in the Van Hulle, bookplate of E. Gilis drawn by Plick. Pierre Joigneaux (1815 - 1892) was a journalist and later an extreme left-wing politician. After being expelled from France by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte he settled in Belgium where he resumed his agronomic studies. Back in France, after an amnesty, in 1859 he resumed his political activities and became the promoter of the School of Viticulture of Beaune. Hubert Jean Van Hulle (1827 - 1900) horticulturist and gardener at the Castle of Hollaeken in Belgium. In 1857, he became head of the Botanical Garden of the University of Ghent. He was also a founding member of the Cercle d'Arboriculture de Belgique. This collection of two texts on the vine in Belgium are EXTREMELY RARE and complete, for the Van Hulle, with the beautiful folding plate. It should be noted that despite the climate and the nature of the soil, Belgium has a vineyard that produces wine and even good wine! The author travels through most of the localities where vines are grown in Belgium and mainly in the south of the country (Ref. Pierre de Crombrugghe). These books are there to prove it once again! I could not find to whom the ex-libris belonged but considering the drawing of this one, it should be a scientist in love or professional of the vine. Very good condition of the binding, of the paper (no foxing) and of the board.
