Stephanie de BEAUHARNAIS, Grand Duchess of... - Lot 309 - Vermot et Associés
Stephanie de BEAUHARNAIS, Grand Duchess of Baden. Stephanie Louise Adrienne de Beauharnais (1789-1860) was the daughter of Count Claude de Beauharnais, a relative by marriage of Empress Josephine and Adrienne de Lezay-Marnésia. She was adopted in 1806 by Napoleon I, who made her a French Imperial Princess. She married on April 8, 1806 to the future Grand Duke Charles II of Baden, son of Crown Prince Charles-Louis of Baden (1755-1801) and Amélie of Hesse-Darmstadt. She became Grand Duchess of Baden - Letter A.S. Written on August 18, addressed to Baron D'ANDLAW telling him of her desire to see him. Mme de Beauharnais also had commissions to give him for the Archduchess and the Queen of Prussia. "... I ask the Baron d'ANDLAW to tell me what prevents him from coming"... She assures him that she will make no use of his answer "not only for the borders of Austria, but even near my daughter, whose heart would be too much wounded, if she could not suppose that the representative of her country, cannot or must not come to her." She apologizes for this "very undiplomatic letter," which will remain between them...
