Tennis/Aix les Bains/Thermalism. Original poster for the creation of the new spa in 1933. By juxtaposing the Roman emperor Augustus, spa-goers and tennis players, the great and little-known artist Lucien Jonas (1880-1947) wanted to show that the town was perfectly able to combine its prestigious ancient history with modern sports: "Aix les Bains, PLM, le nouvel Etablissement thermal, 1933...". Jonas was just as inspired by the mines and miners of the North, as he was by cycling sprinters on the velodrome. This image confirms that he's a great artist. 99x62. Lithograph by Chachouin, Paris. His tennis player, playing chaperone (!!), pipe in mouth, looks like Brugnon, unless it's M.Hulot.
